If you are a senior citizen of good general health, it is advised that you put in 150 minutes of exercise in a week. This is the recommendation of the Center for Disease Control and Prevention. This may seem like a big number, but you can break it down within the week. Each session can only last 15, 20, or 30 mins depending on the exercise. Your goal here is to improve your overall health by improving your flexibility, strength, and balance. Here are some exercises recommended for people 65 years and older.
Try walking, swimming, cycling, aerobics or even Zumba
The key here is to choose low impact exercises that will limit the stress on your joints. Walking is a good choice over jogging. You can have 2 x 15-minutes walks every other day, or even have longer 30 minute walks. Space it throughout the week, and do other activities on the other days. Make sure you use comfortable shoes that have good support for your feet.
You can alternate the days with other activities like swimming or cycling. Both are low impact exercises that work out your whole body. You can beat the hot weather with a few laps around the pool. On a nice cool day, try biking around trails and parks. Enjoy the scenery and the outdoors at the same time. You will want to target 30 minutes of this type of exercise for each session.
If you enjoy group activities, join Zumba or aerobic classes. It's a great way to meet new friends at the same time. Whichever exercise you choose, it is important to pace yourself and always think of safety.
Strength Exercises and Stretches
Complete your exercise for the day with 6 to 8 minute stretching and strength exercises. They can be done at home, and some even while seated. Here are some examples.
Light strength exercises with moderate resistance to help keep you muscles strong and sound.
Stretches keep your body flexible and helps your balance.
As you get older, your intensity of exercises may lighten up a little, but it does not mean you should stop. It is a great way to stay healthy, active and strong even during our later years. When 65 years or older, you are now qualified for Medicare. If you want complete protection and coverage, consider getting a supplement policy.
