Energy takes a huge chunk out most family’s household budget, with most spending about $2500 each year on utilities. Here are ten energy saving tips that will help you make your home more energy-efficient and in turn, save you money on electric bills.
Replace old bulbs with Light Emitting Diode bulbs (LEDs) and save about $90 a year on your electric bill. LED bulbs use up to 25% less energy, can last up to twelve times longer, and are brighter than incandescent bulbs.
Turn them Off
Unplug TV entertainment systems and other electrical appliances. Turn lights off, shut down your computer CPU and monitor when not it use. For well-lit rooms, use natural lighting.
Keep them clean
Check your heat pump, furnace and AC filters once a month and replace them regularly. A dirty air filter can increase your energy costs and cause problems with your equipment.
Cool it down
Reduce water heater temperature from 140 degrees to 120 degrees which, according to the U.S. Department of Energy, is the recommended temperature setting to save about $2 a month. Florida Power and Light stated that the ideal refrigerator temperature runs between 37 and 40 degrees, and the ideal freezer reading is 5 degrees. Any colder, and you’re wasting money. It’s also important to keep your freezer and refrigerator full so they do not have to work as hard to stay cold.
If possible, wash only full loads of clothes for your washing-machine and dishes for for dishwasher. Adjust water level to load size especially when using hot water. Use cold rinse as much as possible.
Planting trees around your house will create shade, which will eventually cool off your home as the trees grow and save you some money. According to the U.S. Forest Service Center for Urban Forest Research, shade from two 25-foot tall trees – one on the east side and one on the west – will save a typical house $57 a year in energy costs.
